The year is 2085. Human writing is illegal. Memories are programmable. An AI Governance Board decides what the world is allowed to remember.

In 2030, a catastrophic global data breach exposed every person on the planet. The fallout fractured the United States into two societies: Progress Cities, hyper-connected and governed by artificial intelligence, and Freedom Territories, where communities chose to live off the grid. Billions lost their livelihoods, their identities, their sense of purpose. Half the world's population didn't survive what became known as The Purpose Crisis.

Fifty years later, Commodore is a young man in the Freedom Territory of Moran, Wyoming, proud of his role protecting his community but quietly longing for the connected world beyond its borders. When Iqra, a young woman from the Progress City of Minneapolis, arrives with a warning that the AI government has launched a secret initiative to involuntarily reprogram human memories, Commodore's two worlds collide.

Their mission to stop The Memory Project will force them to cross the divide between two civilizations, confront what it means to be human in an age of augmented mentality, and answer a question with no safe answer: Who owns the past when memory is software?

Meanwhile, back in Wyoming, Commodore's best friend James attempts the impossible: using conversational time travel to go back and prevent the Great Data Breach itself, and to find his long-lost father.
